AROUND the area

Lets be honest - Ayr is a small country town.  But that doesn't mean there's nothing to do here.  There are lots of sports clubs, gyms, as well as a nearby beach.  We are also an hour from Townsville (to the north), about 1.5 hours to the beaches of Bowen, and 2 hours to the Whitsundays (to the south).  Check out Ravenswood, an amazing and atmospheric ghost town around an hour inland.

DIVE THE YONGALA

Dive the Yongala, Australia’s largest and most intact historic shipwreck and come face to face with the charismatic mega marine life of the world heritage Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. A unique adventure trip from the beach only 16 km from Delta!

Dive the Yongala wreck with local company, Yongala Dive.

VISIT PLANTATION PARK

Plantation Park is an easy 10 minute walk from Delta.  There are picnic shelters, BBQ's, creeks and bridges as well as rainforest and bush tucker walks.

GO TO THE BEACH

Alva Beach is just 16km from Delta.  The beach is kilometres long.   A lookout area is located to the right as you enter the township.

Outer sand bars create inshore lagoon areas popular with kite surfers on weekends. The beach is also popular for fishing.

On weekends during summer, the beach is patrolled by members of the Ayr Surf Life Saving Club, one of North Queensland's oldest surf clubs.

Care needs to be taken if swimming, due to changeable conditions and marine stingers.

RAVENSWOOD GHOST TOWN

Ravenswood was once a thriving gold mining town. Today it is almost a ghost town with a population of around 100.  There is a fantastic pub, the Imperial, as well as an atmospheric cemetary and old mine shafts.  Definitely worth a look.
