What's there to do?

Stay....

We have a massive pool, poolside bar, beach volleyball courts, badminton and 2 movie rooms with free DVD and video library. We have also regular events like bonfires at the beach, soccer matches and BBQs.  The work might be hard, but you have the Delta to come home to each day!

Our backpackers say that staying at the Delta is like staying with family - and many of them stay here for months at a time.  We currently have 4 backpackers who have been here for more than 4 months, and many more who have left and returned.  In fact we have nicknamed one of our backpackers 'Yo-yo' - cause she keeps coming back.   Next month will be her fourth time back here at the Delta this year!

The Delta is like the Hotel California...you can check out, but you can never leave....

Play....

Take the chance and see a sugar cane fire:

Cane fires in Northern Queensland are a tradition that will continue only for a few more years.

As the wind drops and the sun goes down the farmers go out wit
h their cans of liquid fire and drop it at the bottom the cane fields. Seconds later the fields erupt into fireballs of fire that last for less than a minute.

The fire burns off the excess from the cane and clears away the wild life for harvesting in the early hours of the following morning. The surrounding towns get a phenomenon known as "black snow" as the ash rains down for miles around.

A cane fire is one of THE most spectacular sights that you will ever see.

Fishing:

The area around Ayr is known for fantastic fishing!  We can help you organise a deep sea fishing trip during your stay.  Catch your own dinner!  Check out our photo gallery for some photos.

Go to the beach:

We are 10 minutes away from Alva Beach, a natural beach area.  During the year you can see thousands of starfish, pelicans, sand dollars and lots of crabs and fish!

Dive....

Visit one of the top 10 wreck dives in the world!  The beach near Ayr is the closest to the wreck and Yongala Dive runs daily dive trips subject to weather.

The wreck of the SS Yongala lies approx. 12 nautical miles from  Alva Beach near Ayr. This is the closest departure point to the wreck! Yongala Dive offer the fastest trip possible in a purpose built 10m Rigid Inflatable Boat to one of Australia's best diving experiences. You will become captivated by the incredible array of marine life and the coral encrusted structure.

The SS Yongala sank in a cyclone on the 23 March 1911 remaining undiscovered for almost 50 years and was not positively identified until 1966. Lying in 14-28 metres of water and 100m long it is the largest and most intact historic shipwreck in Australian water

It has now become known as one of the worlds top wreck dives and certainly one of Australia’s best dive sites due to the variety of marine life. Queenfish, barracuda, turtles, sea snakes, eagle rays and clown fish are just some of the other incredible life inhabiting the coral encrusted structure.

Situated 11 miles off Cape Bowling Green in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park the wreck has become an artificial reef with more varieties of coral growing on it than most natural reef systems. It is also host to a huge diversity of pelagic and reef species found in the Coral Sea. You will see more fish in one dive on the wreck than 10 on the reef. It’s certainly a dive experience you will never forget.  Click here to visit Yongala Dive
